Motivation and Passion for the Profession

I was asked recently to give an informal presentation to our team about the different aspects of the day to day work that I do and why I do it. This was a great opportunity for me to stop and reflect on the purpose of my career, the purpose of our firm, and the impact we have on peoples’ lives.

What motivates me each and every day?

As I explained to the group, my family is the number one factor motivating me to become a better professional within our firm and the public accounting profession. For me, my career is more than a means to put food on the table. I want to be a good example of an ethical hard working father for my kids (Meaghan and Jackson) while being able to spend time with them. Yes, there is flexibility in public accounting as long as you work for the right firm. Also, my beautiful hard working wife Debbie definitely settled for me so I continually strive to become more accomplished for her.

Why am I so passionate about the profession?

Every day I help some of the region’s top business owners maintain and grow their business. Sometimes this work is in the form of providing financial assurance to lenders, helping them to find comfort that the business is sound or ready for expansion. Sometimes my work comes in the form of helping an automotive client identify tax strategies that provide the savings necessary for a construction project to become financially viable. Other times my work includes helping entrepreneurs explain to investors why it makes sense to start the new business in the first place.

While the day to day functions vary, my career almost always impacts each business owner’s ability to maintain and hire employees. This is why my career and this profession is so great and why I am so passionate about what I do. These employees are real people with real families who earn good wages from the clients I serve. Some of these employees are my neighbors, friends and family. And I am proud that I can make a difference in ensuring that they continue to have the opportunities to work in the small and medium sized companies that form the bedrock of our economy and our community.

This is why I am so passionate about my profession, my team here at DKB and the clients I am lucky enough to help. After all, it always comes down to people no matter what profession you are in.
